History
Woodbine Inc. is a non-profit organisation that provides accommodation, day and employment programs and training to people with intellectual disabilities.
Established in 1951 to provide education and accommodation to 14 mentally retarded (now referred to as intellectually disabled) children in the Warracknabeal district, it is now the largest disability service organisation based in Western Victoria, providing a variety of services, including permanent and respite accommodation, day programs, employment and recreational activities for almost 100 clients who come from all Victorian regions and South Australia.
The Hostel facility was officially opened in November 1954. Warracknabeal, a sub-regional centre in the Wimmera / Mallee region of Victoria, became the first country town in Australia to establish, by voluntary efforts, a private home setting for children with disabilities. Over 50 clients now receive accommodation and after hours support.
While the scope and nature of Woodbine's activities has changed over time, it continues to maintain its focus on the well-being of its clients and a co-operative relationship with the local community. Since Woodbine was established, there have been major changes in policy direction and community attitudes towards people with disabilities.
